People of 2010/Greatest Surprise of 2010
I started off 2010 not really knowing who Matt Smith was and once I had figured out who he was going to be, I didn’t much care for him. Yes I had been through this before with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, how dare this Scottish man come in and assume he knows me and the character I love!? But like the transition of Nine to Ten, after Matt Smith’s terrific debut as The Doctor I was soon hailing him as the finest incarnation of the time-travelling Gallifreyan.
If you’re going to watch Doctor Who, you have to get used to change. Everyone tells you that they are all essentially playing the same character but that isn’t true. Compare Ten’s sad and slightly pathetic demise (something I am still very angry about, he should have left in the same manner he arrived) to Eleven’s twirling, shouting, mad beginning.
Matt Smith is such an angular, odd looking person that it is completely believable that he is an ancient Time Lord from a destroyed planet. Everyone from Moffat to Tumblr users have commented on the fact that he is the youngest actor to ever play him, yet embodies the old soul the best. His performance ranges from the outlandish and giddy to the soft and subtle. He gives the Doctor ticks and quirks and odd little habits that make his performance so well rounded and completely bewitching.
To use such a cliché, he was a breath of fresh air after Tennant. I loved Ten but I began to get sick of his constant apologising and flip-flopping between acceptance as a master of time and space and casual observer-cum-participant.
Basically I adore Matt Smith’s portrayal of one of my favourite characters, he had the confidence and ability to take on a beloved role and make it entirely his own. Plus he gave the Doctor some wicked style.

“Plus he gave the Doctor some wicked style.” Its all in the bow tie, hair, and the less frequently seen suspenders.
